Course Description:

Music Appreciation is designed to help the student develop informed listening skills which promote the development of curiosity about and understanding of many types of music. This course provides an approach to perceptive listening and an introduction to musical elements, style periods, and historical context. We will discuss musicians’ lives, individual styles and representative works. The class material will cover from the Renaissance to the present. This course will relate the music of an era to historical events and to the art and literature of the time period discussed.

Course Objectives:

The main objective of this course is to learn about the various styles and time periods of music. Students are by no means expected to love every style we discuss, but are expected to appreciate each genre and style for what they are and for the effect they’ve had on history, society, and the development of music.
